Pleasing curves recur throughout the arched utility room, which serves as the home's indoor-outdoor transition space.

The home’s primary bedroom is dramatically cantilevered over the rear yard. “The colors of the wooded property are constantly changing throughout the year, and that shifting color palette becomes the main focal point,” says Ramirez of the site’s seasonality. “As the homeowner eloquently put it, ‘The views from our bedroom are like an ever-changing piece of art.’”

The upper cabinets were removed and replaced with a wall of blue-green handmade tile, with a glaze that reflects the sunlight.

The picture window drops to the floor, so as to make the connection between inside and out more fluid. Kaplan divided the backyard into two sections, with the portion against the window imagined as a “quiet, Zen garden made of sedum,” says the architect.

Now, a picture window frames the views into the garden, and a tall glass and steel door accesses the backyard.

The serene primary suite features a private redwood deck that leads down to the pool.

The slim, black frame on the Marvin windows in the bedroom are visually unobtrusive and keep the focus on the view.

A sliding door in the couple’s bedroom is one of several in the home, allowing for easy transitions from privacy to openness. “This house is a connected house, much more so than the first one,” says Kyu Sung.

The master bedroom is situated above the studio and features steeply sloping walls—meaning the bed is located in the middle of the room. A playful Kay Bojesen teak monkey sits on the sideboard.

The extension has black cladding and a M shaped gable roof that becomes a regular gable roof towards the back of the extension.
