The master bedroom is tucked at one end of the house’s long plan, and it shares valley views with the living room.

The bedrooms open up to the landscape for a tree house–like feel.

In the master bedroom, the owners aligned “Vegetable Tree,” a 1940s wallcovering by Josef Frank that was reissued by Svenskt Tenn, behind a custom headboard in the same pattern.

In total, the home features three bedrooms and three baths. Floor-to-ceiling glass continues into this space, overlooking a private outdoor area accessible directly from the bedroom.

Contrasting expanses of glass and rammed earth wrap Bill Gawthrop and Diane Taylor’s home in Yorkville, California. The couple’s bedroom is located at one end of the house and their offices are at the other, with an open-plan kitchen, living room, and dining area in between. The bed frame is Gawthrop’s own design.

If you’re considering forgoing the bed frame entirely, make sure it looks intentional rather than haphazard. Install light fixtures at a level that is appropriate for the low-lying bed, and keep big pillows away from overhead artwork or windows.

Large windows and sliding doors with maximal operability are placed throughout, including the master bedroom, where expansive lift-and-slide mechanisms line three exterior walls. The room is furnished by a custom mahogany headboard and bed frame by Larry Hepler and a glass Murano lamp by Massimiliano Schiavon.

The spacious master suite has been enlarged with a sitting area. A skylight illuminates the room during the daytime.

The renovated studio/pool house in the backyard features a bedroom, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. The bedside lighting is from Apparatus, and the Robusto cement floor tiles are from Clé. The tone-on-tone painting is by Trevor Paglen.
