Beach House Renovations

Expansive or modest, the renovations of these beachside abodes turned them into super inviting retreats.

The pine-plank floor and sliding-glass-door wall allow the deck and playroom to function as one continuous space. The slats shading the entrance are reclaimed pine, cut by Shai. The exterior shower fixture and deck furniture are from Ikea.

Once a classic trailer-park scheme of mint green and white, the exterior of Commune Images owner Sofie Howard’s 500-square-foot Malibu trailer was distinctively repainted. The gate is a patchwork of scrap wood pieces. Partly inspired by 1970s Vans slip-ons, Howard’s boyfriend, artist Grant Shumate, painted accent lines on the side of the trailer. The porch houses a seating area with handmade MORERA Boxes from Commune, and a new outdoor shower. The entrance is beneath the wood-framed canopy.

This solar-powered compound in Venice, California, was inspired by architect and resident David Hertz's surf safaris. As a young man traveling in Bali, he was impressed by tropical village compounds where indoors and out flow into each other. “Those houses seemed able to breathe, like plants and flowers,” he recalls.
