The bathroom features fixtures from Laufen and Hansgrohe.

“A critical aspect of the project was the incorporation of natural light and ventilation within a broad footprint,” Simpson says. Conventionally private areas, like bedrooms and bathrooms, are therefore reinterpreted with more openness in mind. For instance, this bathroom’s skylights mirror those found throughout the rest of the property. The bathtub, basins, and showerhead were all purchased at the Australian retailer Reece.

One of the boldest moves was the glass-encased shower inside the revamped master bedroom. “Obviously, building that shower was not a cost-saving option,” says Keith, “but we used green slate, which is not super expensive, either.” The Architec sinks are from Duravit.

Glenrock tiles in light grey provide dramatic contrast against the freestanding tub by Victoria + Albert. Juilland used the same tiles, though in a darker shade, on the inside of the shower.

The home offers places for solitude and quiet. “Each bedroom was thought of as a separate building,” says the homeowner. “Each bathroom had an outdoor component.” Here, an outdoor shower is a private connection to the outdoors.

A custom skylight floods the bathroom with light. A tempered glass shower and Grohe faucet accent the space; custom glossy cabinetry with Hafele hardware again adds a pop of color.

“Whenever you’re making a minimal bathroom, you always have issues with storage,” Klug says. The wall-hung Duravitsink leaves no place “to put all your junk,” so Klug and Butz added small shelf above. The space to the right, which appears as an extension of the shelf is actually a panel that hides access to the water tank of the wall-hung toilet, also by Duravit.Photo by Eric Roth

The sunken tile tub and shower in the ensuite master bathroom enjoys an outdoor connection in the form of a small atrium.

Custom bathroom vanities have the benefit of being tailored for space efficiency and personal use. Breakfast Woodworks created this custom teak vanity for a master bathroom.

Nighttime hikes often end at the the “cowboy” hot tub where Smith soaks his feet: two nested Hastings galvanized livestock feeders. The tub is surrounded by a Veranda faux-wood deck and fed with hot water from the house’s solar hot-water system.

Sophie, 11, rinses off in the outdoor shower made from 12-by-12-inch Syndecrete tiles cut into 3-by-3-inch squares, which Hertz intentionally set so that they appear to undulate. The sink is from Boffi; the shower fixtures are Arne Jacobsen for Vola.

The master suite was completely updated with Carrera marble, travertine, and handmade encaustic tile that references elements of Stenger’s original design.
