In one of the guest bathrooms, earthy green tiles mimic the verdant hues found in the forest outside.

Architect Reiichi Ikeda renovated this house in Jinseki, Japan, in two phases, starting with the main house (center) and annex (left).

One of four sited in South Los Angeles, a starter home designed by Lehrer Architects and constructed for roughly $200,000 occupies an infill lot provided by the city.

Square Daltile tiles line almost every surface of the bathroom, which is flooded in natural light.

“Color-blocking all four walls make this zone feel like it has its own identity,” says Sundius. “It’s a bit of luxury in 420 square feet.”

Wood panelling brings a warmth to the concrete-and-white space.

Since obtaining tiles in the right color blue proved impossible, the tiles were painted using “Cobalt” from SIGMA Coatings by NCS Colour.

“It’s like being on a tropical island where you can take a shower under the trees, except you’re actually in Warsaw,” says Karol.

Skylights above the mudroom and in the en suite shower let in plenty of natural light in unexpected spaces.

In the main bath, a wall of Heath Ceramics tile joins a terrazzo floor from Ann Sacks.

In a sophisticated main bathroom in Seattle, sea-green concrete floor tiles with a geometric pattern provide a lawn of color against wood walls and white tile. The paper lanterns are also a clear homage to the building’s Japanese inspirations.
