Custom oak cabinetry and marble counters and backsplash define the small kitchen in the open plan. The rug is by Armadillo & Co.

The windows and doors are by Solar Innovations, with pale wood flooring by Sawyer Mason, a Wittus fireplace, and Muuto sofas.

There are easy lines of sight between the main floor and the upper level.

“We wanted a palette that would express a more neutral feeling in the living, dining and bedroom areas, and a touch of color in the kitchen and bathroom areas,” says Aretio.

The living room features a Malibu sofa from Kasala, and it sits above a Moroccan wool carpet the owner inherited.

Custom cabinetry in the same style saves floorspace, and visually links to the other bedroom and downstairs.

Chester and Chloe spent weeks plotted the joinery design with Money and their carpenter to ensure everything fitted seamlessly, including this nifty hidden laundry under the stairs. Even the tiny cupboard at the bottom of the staircase isn't wasted: it's a built-in laundry basket!

Downstairs, oak parquet flooring, built-in shelving, and rimu wood cabinetry create a warm work environment.

The kitchen is tucked into a recess in the open-plan living space, offering visual separation from the lounge and work areas. This has the effect of making the compact space feel larger. Owner Glen Vriesema selected the dark grey finish for the kitchen, but it is also available in a white finish and natural timber. Other specification options include lighting and flooring.

The renovated basement includes understair cabinetry designed by Allison and built/installed by Terrien Designs. The CB2 table is paired with Ton Salt chairs. The wall print is by David Shrigley.

Generous windows, framed by electric shades, bring nature inside the space along with ample nature light for when inspiration strikes in the art studio.

Isaac invested in a video set up that easily and discreetly folds up into the cabinetry above his desktop computer, which was also a recent purchase.

The backsplash and countertops are green quartzite to bring the colors of nature inside (but in retrospect, Bassam and Ming would pick another material besides natural stone for ease of maintenance). The flooring and all the cabinetry is natural white oak. The pendant hanging over the dining table is NR2 by Moooi, chosen for its transparency.

The design team converted the formal dining room into a unique indoor/outdoor bar. A wooden ceiling and accordion doors connect the little lounge area right to the deck when the weather’s nice, and close it off into a cozy den when the nights start to cool.

The Melrose 6 Panel Horizontal Door is brilliantly unique, making it perfect for a lover of all things mod. It has subtle panels with a smooth, sleek finish.

A large island with built-in storage solved two issues: It gave the family space for a pantry, and room to invite guests over.
