Balcony gardens

When creative director Patrick O’Neill bought Hailey House, a Richard Neutra home built in the Hollywood Hills in 1959, the steeply sloping backyard was “untamed and nondescript,” says the native Angeleno. With the help of landscape architect John Sharp, he transformed it into a terraced outdoor living and entertaining space comprising five distinct “rooms,” including the firepit area. Patrick and his dog, Burt, stand on the home’s balcony, which overlooks the yard.

The rooftop deck offers panoramic views of the neighborhood. The couple have not furnished the deck because it gets very windy.

“There is an enormous amount of glass here,” laughs Vanbesien—so much so that the design team struggled to find enough wall space to mount the heat pump.

For the floor of the exterior terrace, cotto tiles were replaced with marble from the Greek island of Tinos.

The reddish stone tile and corresponding paint is a references to tomette, a popular French terracotta tile.

An olive-green rendition of Danish furniture brand HAY’s Palissade Cone Table complements the new green awning. Powder-coated steel chairs, also from HAY, surround the table.

A vast terrace overlooks a nearby park, while the ground floor patio (connected to Vanbesien’s office) opens up to a garden.

Danielle Noiset-Lekeu and Michel Noiset’s Immeuble Clarté apartment encompasses a balcony equipped with roller blinds and canvas awnings for shade.

A rooftop terrace provides an outdoor space overlooking the former monastery grounds.

Because the owners wanted to add an additional level including a family room and roof deck to the top floor of the townhouse, the architects needed to stabilize the foundation to accommodate the additional weight.
