Balcony
One of the main reasons why balconies aren’t used as frequently as they could be is because they are often too small and hence a little claustrophobic. When planning balconies, it helps if you can make them as large and open as possible, and locate them in a spot with prime views like what architect Bruce Bolander has done with this Canyon house on a sloping site in Malibu.
An inset private balcony was also part of the addition. “It’s basically a rain screen exterior,” says Jason. “There's a bunch of layers of waterproofing below it with this wood screen on top. So, in theory it also acts similar to a sunshade to let the air ventilate from behind it, so it keeps the space cooler than traditional siding wood.”
