What makes this project interesting?

As a Photographer with an eye for nature, housing and design, I felt in love with this house since they spent their time for ideas and creation of the plans. I love the rough structure of the concrete, the window arrangements glas and wood and how the interior is working with it since then. New & old things were lovingly added like a composition of a painting. Air is always fresh because of high technology inside. As a apart of the concept, the balcony to the street says a hello to people coming along.

About house & neighborhood

Corin, Oli, Niki and Tom live in one of three townhouses, which were built in the years 2010 to 2012 in the south hessian city of Darmstadt in Germany. Our town has 152.000 inhabitants. Housing space has become very limited and pricy, as the region close to Frankfurt is economically thriving and ever more people are moving in. Additionally, the University of Darmstadt is in walking distance, so the old buildings around are mostly from Art Nouveau age and since years very popular amongst students and families. These three houses are built on a formerly abandoned parcel of land, there was only a little kisok and a huge hedge of blackberries. Now building owners are three happy families with kids.

The basic concept of our project is to overcome the isolated living, which is so common to neighborhoods in many of todays bigger cities. This also reflects a trend which has become very notable, as many housing projects in urban areas are being developed in collectives. Instead of creating one big structure with an apartment for every family, we decided to build three unique townhouses with a shared garden. The plans were developed by three different architects in close collaboration with the respective building owners. Two of the three builders are architects themselves and created the plan themselves. This resulted in three very individual buildings which down to a very detailed level reflect the owner’s taste and needs.

This house has a separated flat on the ground floor. 538 sqft, rented out to a students couple. The flat could also be used as office space or a shop. The family lives on the second to the attic on 4 floors on 2.100 sqft. A flight of stairs is the connection to the terrace and the shared garden, where the families and the kids meet, hang out and play. Photo 6 of 15 in Around my corner by Tanja B. Heuser
