The presentation will include a brief overview of his design for the church and the family’s connection to the parish by his youngest daughter Catherine Cody Nemirovsky. A book signing at the Palm Springs Art Museum's new Architecture and Design Center will follow.

Atlanta Central Library (Atlanta, 1980) The last structure that Breuer designed (he was too ill to attend the dedication ceremony), the Atlanta Central Library was an evolution of the style and shapes used for the Whitney, a sculptural structure of cubes right angles. The airy shapes, combined with the heavy massing of concrete, led Barry Bergdoll, the chief curator of architecture at the Museum of Modern Art, to refer to this type of construction as “the invention of heavy lightness.” Photo Credit: Alexsandr Zykov, Creative Commons

Library for University of Guyana in Cayenne, French Guinea (rh+ architecture: 2013) As if working off the metaphor of libraries as places of illumination, this new structure plays with sunlight and shade with a double facade. An outer lattice of timber slats creates horizontal lines of light which then pass through a wall filled with irregular windows, a feature recalling Corbusier’s chapel of Notre Dame du Haut.

The Cor-Ten panels make up the library’s lateral facade and act as a light filter, preventing direct sunlight from penetrating in. The dynamic panels dramatically transform the appearance of the front facade, whether open or closed.
