A Chelsea Apartment

This 800-square-foot apartment celebrates light and views to transform a small space into a spacious feeling and airy urban oasis for a growing family. Taking advantage of the apartment’s four exposures and high ceilings, several walls and superfluous elements such as a formal hallway were removed and openings were enlarged. In areas where privacy were desired full-height glass partitions with stained wood frames were added to keep the openness. The ceilings are painted in a high-gloss lacquer, reflecting light both day and night and creating an illuminous glow. The kitchen cabinets in white, natural fir and two alternating shades of green inspired by Castelvetrano olives contrast with marble backsplashes. Large custom upholstered acoustical panels between the living room and dining area create a flexible bedroom.
