Hotline Bling: Neon Design Edition
Drake was recently crowned winner of Best Hip-Hop Video for "Hotline Bling" at the 2016 MTV VMA. Young Drizzy eloquently admits, "I fu*k with Turrell", and the video in question overtly repurposes James Turrell's light and space art installation pieces. Nonetheless, neon is super cool and here we celebrate Drake's VMA win with a neon collection.
Husband and wife Tim Stokes and Nathalie Wolberg left their pint-size Parisian apartment behind to undertake a hands-on renovation of an industrial, 6,000-square-foot warehouse in Antwerp, Belgium. It’s now home to an expansive live/work space containing two studios—one for each of them—two exhibition galleries, and an integrated courtyard.
Virginia Tech’s VT Solar scored the highest in both the Architecture and Dwelling categories. The south, east, and west walls are constructed of two panels of thin translucent polycarbonate, which was filled with aerogel insulation. LEDs, which can display a range of millions of colors, light the panels from within.
As we were led from one space to the next, getting a sense of the circulation of the building, we eventually came to this smaller studio at street level. Some of us even watched from the window to the outside. I very much liked the way the closet and the stairwell, behind the open closet door at right, were incorporated into this dance. Not only did it expand the space in which the dancers had to work, but it made use of the entire area available to them, enlarging the notion of what's "danceable" and what's for services. The original concrete surfaces are intentionally visible through, and are highlighted by, the veils of the material intervention out of respect for Breuer's unique exploration in his design of the textural possibilities of a single material. Photo by Eduard Hueber/Arch Photo.

In Saint Ouen, France, a suburb of Paris, architect Nathalie Wolberg plays with lighting and interior design at her house/studio, Maison NW. The three-level building, located in a former printing house from the 1950s, acts as a blank canvas for her to experiment with colorful, dramatic objects that evoke strong emotions.
