Tanya Aguiñiga

Tanya Aguiñiga created the Chiapas stool after working with Mayan weavers in Mexico. "The women create beautiful animals out of hand woven fabrics," Aguiñiga says. "These stools are inspired by the animals and are hand-woven fabric with a wool felt bottom."

Textile artist Hiroko Takeda trained in Kyoto and Paris, and later worked for Jack Lenor Larsen in New York. She maintains a one-woman studio in Brooklyn, and her production process includes sending meticulously drawn instructions to craftsmen in Japan, who weave accordingly. Hiroko admits that it is sometimes hard for these elderly craftsmen to understand her unorthodox take on their traditional techniques.

For this art piece, which she says is inspired by the “quiet but powerful” Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, Takeda wanted to “capture a subtlety of colors” by using bundled silk tape for depth and texture.

Layer by layer, this crumbling 18th-century flat in the middle of Barcelona found new life at the hands of architect Benedetta Tagliabue. Paths of Andalusian tile and intervening plaster walls help to delineate space in the expansive apartment, which is centered around an internal entry courtyard. The armchair, designed by Peter and Alison Smithson, is covered in a Josef Frank textile from Just Scandinavian. The white piece just behind it is a repurposed Austrian stove that’s now used as a storage device.
