Explore IKEA's New Innovation Lab in Copenhagen

Designed by Danish firm Spacon & X, the space will host lectures, workshops, and events, all with the goal of fostering new ideas and prototypes that improve urban living—with a focus on sustainability—across the globe.

Its inaugural exhibtion, “Fresh living Lab,” showcases six products from young designers that highlight how our everyday activities can impact—for better or worse—the environemnt. This includes, according to Space 10, "a table that charges your phones by turning heat into electricity, to a chair that rewards you for exercising, or an art piece that reveals itself when your energy consumption decreases."

"We [didn't] want it to look like one of these clichés of the creative office where people work on horse saddles and have meeting in ski lifts," says Simon Caspersen, Space 10's Director of Communication. Instead the design of Space 10's interior focuses on offering a wide variety of workspaces, enabling its users to shift their postures throughout the day and avoid unhealthy and non-stop sitting. Custom furniture, such as the combination couch and table seen here, strike a balance of simple beauty and functionality.
"We [didn't] want it to look like one of these clichés of the creative office where people work on horse saddles and have meeting in ski lifts," says Simon Caspersen, Space 10's Director of Communication. Instead the design of Space 10's interior focuses on offering a wide variety of workspaces, enabling its users to shift their postures throughout the day and avoid unhealthy and non-stop sitting. The "eat, meet, and read area" was, as its name suggests, designed to be accommodate a wide range of activities. Flexibility was important in the design throughout; wide open spaces and adaptable furniture (some sport wheels for easy movement, others items can fold-up for storage) mean the space can be easily adapted for a 200-person lecture or 60-person workshop. In terms of the overall aesthetic, "We wanted to create a space that's conducive to creativity and innovation but not be too distrubing with too many bright colors and contrasts. We still wanted to keep a very earthy and pleasant tone," says Svend Jacob Pedersen, Creative Director and Founding Partner of Spacon & X.
