Modernist Building in Los Angeles' Koreatown is Redesigned as The Line Hotel

What happens when a group of creative thinkers, such as Los Angeles-based designer (and Dwell on Design L.A. speaker) Sean Knibb, chef and restaurateur Roy Choi, hotelier Andrew Zobler of Sydell Group, entrepreneurs Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung, and L.A.-nightlife impresarios Jonnie and Mark Houston, get together to build a hotel in Koreatown? The magnificently modern Line hotel happens.

Roy Choi’s upscale coffee shop, caFe, features Saarinen dining and side tables from Hive Modern and custom modular booths by Knibb Design. Widely known in Los Angeles for his Korean-fusion Kogi taco trucks, Roy Choi is not only the genius behind the food truck trend, but also the Line hotel’s restaurant collaborator. Aside from caFe, the lobby shop that serves gourmet coffee, pastries and pizza, the hotel also offers its patrons a health-conscious menu at Commissary and Korean fare at POT.

Guestrooms at the Line hotel all include uniquely crafted furniture pieces by Knibb Design, such as these Negril chairs and Bianco table. A Montego Bay, Jamaica, native, Sean Knibb creatively blends natural and man-made elements in to his designs. His company’s mantra is “creative, human, experience,” all of which are visible in the interior and exterior of the Line hotel. Knibb studied at the award-winning design school Otis Parsons School of the Arts, known for its focus in environmental design.

The concrete and glass structure reaches 12 stories above the city streets on Wilshire Boulevard, at the heart of Koreatown. Built in 1964, the Brutalist-style building originally stood as a Hyatt Hotel, and re-opened as the Line hotel in 2014. In keeping an authentic Los Angeles vibe at the forefront, the Sydell Group, which also owns and operates the Ace hotels and New York’s NoMad Hotel, has collaborated with local artists, restaurateurs and businesses. A must-visit at the Line is the design and lifestyle boutique Poketo, which stocks everything from apparel, to books, magazines, stationary, and apothecary items.
