Modern Australian Homes Part One

A few weeks ago we compiled our favorite homes in Sydney, Australia; now, check out some homes from the southern coast of the land down under.

The large, naturally lit kitchen is the heart of the house. Messmate-clad cupboards and huge expanses of glass dominate the space where Angelucci uses the sink, Gorman works at the kitchen island, and Pepa and Hazel look on. Play in the courtyard between the kitchen and garage is easily supervised and enclosed from the alley behind the house.

Courtyard House, Location: Somers Victoria Australia, Architect: Rowan Opat .Evolving from the notion of a series of outbuildings

on a greenfi eld site, principles of

passive solar design have informed this courtyard

house. The northern eaves respond directly to

shading becoming shallower in proportion to the

depth of space as experienced in the square plan.

As the dominant designed area, on this hectare

site, the courtyard both surrounds and is

surrounded by the house, creating a contained

space within an otherwise semi-rural block.
