More Favorite Play! Spaces

Our September 2011 issue is about to hit newsstands, but we're not finished celebrating play (the theme of our July/August 2011 issue). Earlier this week we featured five fantastic projects from the new Gingko Press book Play! Indoor and Outdoor, and here we highlight five more favorites from the 58 projects included in the book.

Die Baupiloten also designed the Familienservice School in Berlin, located in a converted floor of an office building. In this play space, bookshelves, reading nooks, and other stackable polygons can be piled in a multitude of formations so that the learning landscape is ever-changing.

In Tromsø, Norway, 70°N Arkitektur designed a series of six kindergartens based on the same guiding principles. Each school is organized in longitudinal zones that include exterior play spaces, roof terraces, and indoor "streets."

Several of the Tromsø kindergartens feature hinged walls, like the one shown here. These movable partitions create the opportunity to divide spaces into large or small areas. The walls also feature built-in furniture, drawers, whiteboards, climbing walls, and more.

In the Shiga Prefecture of Japan, Endo Shuhei Architect Institute designed Bubbletecture M, this stunning kindergarten. Octagonal rooms are connected by concrete boxes, all of which are covered by a domed roof made of wooden beams and hexagonal metal fittings.
