The Hampton House is located just outside of Charleston's historic district in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood, across from the park it's named after. The front yard, designed by landscape architect Robert Maerlender, features green circles of astroturf stamped onto a gray canvas of shale and framed by an angled wood fence.

In a chaotic stretch of Brooklyn, architect Nicholas Hunt built a 55-square-foot reprieve from the bustle in his own backyard. The studio, crafted with salvaged fence pickets and cedar planks, is crowned with a Plexiglas skylight.

The social spaces are at the rear of the yard, including turf for the kids’ play and a cooking and dining area, all tucked behind a custom concrete planter. The raised beds, including on top of the fence, are for herbs, as the homeowners are avid cooks.

The home’s exterior went from beige to dark green, and a new matching fence encloses a patio. The house numbers are from HEWI.

“Concealing a stair leading to trail access to the park, the wall’s form suggests the folds and striations of the sandstone geology,” explains SurfaceDesign. While the wall and fence provide more privacy for the backyard, their transparency restores visual connections with the park.

In the courtyard, the fence line climbs upward, drawing the eyes to the clouds.
