‘2019 Furniture Trends’ from William Garvey Furniture Makers

Leading British furniture designer and maker, Bill Garvey, Managing Director of William Garvey, lets us know what the latest furniture trends are for 2019 and how you can bring these fashions in to your home …

Bathrooms:

The 2019 bathroom will embody all things luxurious, naturally bespoke and long-lasting, which has led to a growth for unusual materials to enter the space. Wood is answering these ideals perfectly, and is a great alternative for replacing cold ceramics with a modern take on adding texture and warmth.

Teak and cedar are a great choice of wood in the bathroom and furthermore, will create architectural interest and added sense of luxury. Not only will the wood naturally resist rot, but each has a wonderful aroma making them the ideal choice for bath tubs as well as saunas, basins and shower rooms. The oil in cedar wood will allow it to bead up and resist water naturally which is the same for teak, however teak is extremely strong wood and considered the gold standard for bathroom application.

With the ability to not impact too much on space, freestanding baths can be fitted in a variety of formations, keeping freestanding models a popular choice in our homes. That being said, plunge bath tubs or specially designed corner-tubs that optimize space will see the most growth in 2019, especially as new homes being built in the current decade are smaller than ever before.

Kitchen:

Bespoke design seems to be dominating trends for the 2019 kitchen and I believe this is because a truly bespoke project doesn’t possess the standard limitations normally present with ‘off the peg’.

Whether you opt for a single introduction of wood or commit to an all wood scheme, this trend is perfectly suited to the humid environment like the kitchen. A truly original look, wood gives you the chance to move away from the standard ceramic butler sink or white lacquer cabinetry, and create something that is different with that all important ‘wow factor’.

Creating a real design advantage, unusual surfaces such as wood in your kitchen will allow you to inject small areas of personality and individuality where you may not have thought possible; like the kitchen sink, floating breakfast bar or on-trend dark colour scheme! However, it is difficult to assign a colour to the kitchen sink as its construction will ultimately determine the finish.

For instance, a ceramic sink will of course be able to take on a coloured glaze in baby blue or sage green but when considering a wooden sink, a painted finish will not work in the same vein. With that, we are finding more natural colour palettes are resonating more in the kitchen as raw materials are coming together to offset and soften industrial accents like concrete worktops and metal splashbacks. Consequently, the organic qualities of wood are being used as a feature in the kitchen to great effect, as well as achieve faster build times and tailor-made design qualities.

Bedrooms:

We are seeing the most growth amongst our tailor-made organisational storage, with bespoke grid furniture becoming an all-inclusive lightweight and modern furniture solution for the bedroom. Providing the perfect framework for creating a luxury walk-in dressing room out of a redundant box room, this style of wardrobe concept will work with the space rather than against it, able to create a luxury closet space designed for personal beautification, grooming and dressing: a top priority in 2019.

Designed to fit any space, grid furniture is both versatile and stylish, and can be built independently to complement existing furniture or when combined with custom-made non-modular wardrobes, the homeowner is able to achieve a wall-to-wall storage solution that is truly unique. For greater impact, opt for full height wardrobes from floor to ceiling and wall-to-wall. This will not only frame the work area and maximise storage space but also bring a different tone or texture into the room. If you worry that a large area of ‘the same’ will dominate a room then perhaps soften the look with fabric wardrobe panels.

Suede and silk are great materials for upholstery, as they are both long lasting and extremely luxurious to look at, and feel! If treated properly and kept away from sunlight then upholstered furniture will look beautiful and stay strong for years, even decades. Tailor-made furniture has become key in the bedroom, creating individual spaces with personalised design and interior storage. This element of individualism is playing to the anywhere, anytime generation that want a fuss-free environment, albeit a single dressing table to a non-modular multi use storage and beauty center.
