1. 'New York', a second home of the client who spent his shining youth of 20s and 30s in there.
2. 'Retro' feeling with unique image made of various colors and texture giving a sense of venerability.
3. 'Braces' the client’s specialty and major
These three keywords started the designing of ‘New York Braces Dental’, located in a small building with old tiles next to a main street near Gangnam-gu Office.
New York Braces Dental’, A Dentistry Specializing in Orthodontics
Braces is installed in order to correct skeletal incongruity of uneven teeth by using brackets that are usually made of metals. Teeth and brackets – two materials with different characteristics, building a harmony to achieve a single purpose – create a strong image. The image of orthodontics can be seen in pieces of furniture here. Different materials become interconnected with each other to become a piece of furniture.
Designing Together with the Client
Space design evolves itself through each discussion session with the client. It is common to see changes in existing design due to financial, spatial, and esthetic issues. The finished space is often different from the initial concept – and this experience was no exception. This was because old-looking textures and varying colors are at odds with a hygienic space. To reduce the possibility of being disliked from client’s customers, characteristics of retro design such as unique-looking colors and old-looking textures have been reduced, and a more refined space was born.
Discomfort from a Dentistry
Although presenting a hygienic image through clean and regularized space is the general tendency, it causes vague discomfort and tension. The designer used to hate going to a dentist during youth, saying: “It is already scary when you listening to noise from machines and smelling that characteristic smell of dentistry. I was especially fearful of the moment when I had to wait my turn in a rigid-feeling, brightly-lighted waiting place.” There was a need to make the place comfortable, in addition to giving a hygienic image. The usage of retro concept in pieces of furniture and props is to reduce a feeling of discomfort.
The designer hopes to make a comfortable space where a cup of coffee can chase away tension and provide relaxation, unlike other spaces where one has to wait for his turn in anxiety, for “New York Brace Dental.”
