The studio’s mobility has proved its worth. “We’ve moved it to various rentals and will move it to our new house once it’s complete,” says Kat. “We may bring it downtown for an arts festival.”

The rounded ceiling, made of cypress planks left over from Brian’s construction business, bounces and softens light—a strategy often used by museums and galleries. The custom semicircular windows were a splurge. “In any design, certain elements take it to the next level,” Ostman says. “The glazing makes the ceiling feel taller, grander.”

The studio is wrapped in corrugated Cor-Ten steel, while the ends are composed of charred reclaimed cedar.

Kat’s workbench is made of a century-old wooden beam from a warehouse in Duluth, Minnesota.

When Kat and Brian Mast downsized to a rented house in Salida, Colorado, the lack of studio space for Kat, an artist, was a problem. The solution, designed by their daughter, Andrea Ostman, was a stand-alone studio on wheels. With its high roof and flatbed trailer base, it looks like a modern-day covered wagon and is similarly able to roam.

With previous uses a butcher shop, grocery store, window workshop, hat shop, and a restaurant, the mix-and-match facade feels like an appropriate reflection of the renovated home's varied history.

Highly-durable furniture was chosen for the upper deck's sitting area, which routinely hosts sunset parties.
