Andrew Goetz: We bought our apartment more than 20 years ago. It’s in a 1938 Art Moderne building in Chelsea by Horace Ginsbern. I’m usually more of a minimalist‚ and like things more white‚ so this very peachy bathroom did take some getting used to.

But it’s now something we love because of how and why we started our business: It’s a small bathroom‚ without much storage space‚ and we wanted things that could sit out and look good on our shelves. That was the basic idea for Malin+Goetz‚ that our products should be able to dress up any room‚ no matter what it looks like.

Matthew Malin: It’s a little kitschy and funky‚ which is weird for us‚ because we’re normally not that kitschy. But it is what it is‚ and we wanted to respect the integrity of the original architecture while making it work for us. We restored it to its original luster with a few new embellishments‚ so we weren’t totally stuck in 1938. It’s a tiny piece of real estate that we both share‚ so you need to make the most of what you have.

Make It Yours

Swivel Mirror: Mounted high on the wall‚ a swivel mirror helps make the most of the narrow space by providing reflections at an angle and allowing for a storage rack below.

Shelving: Heavy-duty vintage chrome racks from the now defunct Alexander’s department store were a flea market find. “We replated them‚” says Andrew‚ “and put one in the shower and one above the sink‚” for keeping toiletries right where they’re needed.

Grout and Skim Coat: To refresh the room after decades of wear and tear‚ the couple kept the original fixtures and ceramics but regrouted the tile and skim coated and painted rough walls to smooth them out.

Apothecary Vessels: Glass bottles and jars—including new‚ vintage‚ and their own brand—contain items that are difficult to store without drawers‚ like cotton swabs‚ scissors‚ razors‚ tweezers‚ and nail clippers.
