Los Angeles–based architects Mutuo have executed three adjacent homes that omit the boundaries typically found in suburban neighborhoods. Back patios flow together, wide-open rooftop terraces allow for direct sight lines and conversation, and bridged walkways connect to the same hillside at the rear. “It explores preconceived ideas of neighboring, semiprivate spaces,” say the architects.

Although each 2,200-square-foot home is slightly different, a common aesthetic unifies the bunch. While building the Wonderland Houses, Mutuo experimented with construction methods and materials by implementing roughcast concrete retaining walls, board-formed concrete, and wood- and steel-framed construction.
