The small gold statue above the entrance is an imaginative version of the demon figurines found on many machiya rooftops. Called Shoki-san, they’re believed to guard against disease and fire. In typical DIY spirit, the family made their own, using epoxy clay and gold paint. "We debated whether to model it after Fat Thor or the Mandalorian from the new Star Wars show," says Chris with a grin. "As you can see, the Mandalorian won."
