Headquartered in Stillwater, Hive Modular builds beautiful, economical prefabs, and are known for their efficient speed and high quality designs. The company was established in 2004, and has built more than 25 residential prefabs across the U.S. and Canada.

2. HGA Architects and Engineers

If you haven’t committed to building your prefab home yet, why not try living in one of these three cabins set in the 456-acre Whitetail Woods Regional Park in the Twin Cities area?

Designed by HGA Architects and Engineers—a firm with offices in eight cities across the country, including Minneapolis—the prefab cabins were designed off-site before being transported to the park and set atop a series of concrete piers.

3. Alchemy Architects

Best known for their weeHouse modular prefabricated housing system, which optimizes aspects of the traditional design-build process, Alchemy Architects is another great company to consider.

The Saint Paul–based team has applied their weeHouse process to a number of impressive customized projects—including this 756-square-foot house in Twin Harbors. The two-bedroom home features red stained pine “Corncrib” siding, an IKEA kitchen, and a rooftop deck that connects to a guest room.

4. Lazor / Office

Experienced architect Charlie Lazor developed FlatPak, the prefabricated house system that consists of only three basic components: concrete wall panels; wood-framed panels with wood, metal, or cement-board siding; and a wood frame infilled with large expanses of glass. His goal was to provide "architecture for the ordinary pocketbook.”

Lazor’s first FlatPak project, which he built in 2005, was his very own family home in Minneapolis.
