8 New Spire Designs That Could Crown the Notre Dame Cathedral

On April 17, following the massive fire that destroyed the Notre Dame Cathedral, France’s prime minister Edouard Philippe announced a contest to design a new roof and spire for the famous building. "The international competition will allow us to ask the question of whether we should even re-create the spire as it was conceived by Viollet-le-Duc," Philippe said at a press conference. "Or if, as is often the case in the evolution of heritage, we should endow Notre Dame with a new spire."

The announcement was met with a flurry of conceptual designs across social media from architects around the world. We've rounded up their inventive proposals below—and invite you to share your own designs on Instagram or Twitter with #dwellspire. We’ll share our favorite submissions!
