Shaped like an acorn, this adorable, prefabricated pod with its oversized shingles looks like something out of a fairy tale. Designed by Dominic Ash and Jeremy Fitter, this imaginative retreat combines high-quality furniture craftsmanship with computer modeling to produce a space-efficient design with impressive features, like its aircraft-style plug door and rotating base. A large skylight and windows bathe the timber-lined interior with natural light and frame views of the outdoors.

A Green-Roofed Prefab Retreat in Brazil

Deep in Southern Brazil’s lush forests sits a prefab cabin that blends into the misty woods with its dark steel envelope and verdant green roof. Architecture firm MAPA designed the 1,050-square-foot modular retreat for a couple who wanted to live lightly on the land and were attracted to the architects’ Minimod series, a line of customizable prefab cabins built of cross-laminated timber. Elevated on stilts for reduced site impact, the cabin is fitted with large panes of glass to blur the line between indoors and out.

Inshriach Bothy in Scotland

Conceived to give artists a quiet place to escape and focus on their creative pursuits, the Inshriach Bothy is the first prefabricated structure of the Bothy Project, a network of small-scale, off-grid art residency spaces in rural Scotland. Artist Bobby Niven and architect Iain MacLeod designed the off-grid, live/work space to recall the vernacular dwellings of the Scottish Highlands, while giving the building modern appeal. The gabled building was fabricated in residence at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and then transported to the Inshriach Estate.

In a rural field 90 minutes outside of Portland, Oregon, Canadian design/build practice Drop Structures has installed a tiny shed for a software developer looking to unwind from city pressures. Set up in just four hours, the 108-square-foot structure embraces the outdoors with its minimalist aesthetic and floor-to-ceiling windows that face the woods.

Accessible only by helicopter or horseback across a rugged, high-mountain landscape, this remote hunting cabin set by a lake is a dreamy prefab designed by Snøhetta for finance guru Osvald Bjelland. In exploring how prefabrication can produce customizable, eco-friendly buildings, Amsterdam–based design studio Woonpioniers crafted Indigo, an 861-square-foot, modular, live/work space for a sculptor with a desire to feel enveloped by the forest. Fronted by full-height glazing, the prefabricated home emphasizes its feeling of immersion in nature with its use of pine used that lines the interior, from the walls and ceilings to the cabinetry and stairs.

A Glass-Walled Bedroom in Finland

Combining the elements of a traditional garden shed with a greenhouse, Ville Hara of Avanto Architects and designer Linda Bergroth of Hel Yes! created this stunning glass bedroom on a remote Finnish island as a prototype for their Kekkilä Green Sheds, a series of customizable gabled structures built with prefabricated parts of Finnish pine and toughened safety glass that can be easily self-assembled with no specialized equipment. Behind the glass enclosure is a timber-clad storage unit with double doors.

When I-Kanda Architects approached the project of a weekend home nestled in the White Mountains, they found inspiration in the region's rugged topography and worked to achieve a modern family retreat with a modest environmental footprint. Isamu Kanda, principal at I-Kanda, initially conceived of the cabin as a weekend retreat for a couple. As the project was underway, the retreat for two became a retreat for a family of three—and ultimately evolved into a 900-square-foot weekend cabin for a growing family of four.
