Kevin Roche on How He Got His Start—Nodding Off in an Interview With Eero Saarinen

Irish-American architect Kevin Roche joined Eero Saarinen's office in 1950. The two worked closely and became fast friends. After Saarinen died unexpectedly in 1961, Roche and John Dinkeloo led the realization of New York's TWA Terminal (above) and many other high-profile commissions, such as CBS headquarters and Bell Laboratories. "Aline Saarinen had to talk the clients into wanting anything to do with us," Roche recalls. "They wanted to get another 'real' architect."
