A Fashion Stylist Gave This Brooklyn Duplex a Serious Makeover—Now it’s Asking $5M

Once a sea captain’s residence in the 1850s, Katie Mossman’s Greenpoint address comes with two units and a detached studio.

When Katie Mossman purchased this Brooklyn home in 2014, the property was largely dilapidated, with a dark and outdated interior. She envisioned a brighter space that allowed for more indoor/outdoor living—a home that, in her words, "felt like California." It took her almost five years to complete the renovation, which has resulted in a lofty great room with concrete floors, a double-height glass wall in the rear, and a revived detached studio in the garden.

The townhome sits along Green Street, a quiet residential are located near the East River and the heart of trendy Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The home was reportedly once the residence of a sea captain in the 1850s.

The home is situated along a cozy street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, just a block from the water taxi to Manhattan. Arranged as a duplex, the property consists of a three-bedroom owner’s suite and a two-bedroom rental apartment, providing plenty of space and options for new owners. Multiple decks, a rooftop terrace, and backyard garden were added to complete Mossman’s vision for outdoor living.

The entry leads to a formal living room, which displays Mossman’s chair collection, including a pair by Ib Kofod-Larsen and a Rib Lounge Chair by Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner for Forma Brazil. The painting is by artist Les Rogers.

The renovation, featured in Architectural Digest earlier this year, resulted in a crisp, airy space, which Mossman has filled with her collection of vintage furniture. In an interview with AD, she discusses how the renovation expanded her taste from a purely minimalist aesthetic into accepting warmer hues and more organic materials. The kitchen is grounded by a Carrera marble island, over which hangs a set of opaline pendant lamps from the 1970s. The bar stools are also vintage from the 1970s, while the bright green chairs around the dining table are by Bruno Rey.

Upstairs, the bright master bedroom follows a more muted aesthetic. The space also offers a large walk-in closet, through which the master bathroom and a private terrace can be accessed.

The opposite end of the master bedroom features a sitting area with an ornate marble mantle from Olde Good Things. A mint-green Poet Sofa by Finn Juhl stands opposite a sheepskin Clam Chair by Philip Arctander, while the wooden horse was a purchase from Mossman's time in Indonesia.

The master bathroom is clad in Arabescato marble sourced from several different Italian quarries. Sconces above the vanity were finds from eBay.

Reportedly, it took eight slabs of marble to achieve the seamless look Mossman imagined. In the interview with AD, she said, "I also didn’t want any rust in them. I liked the graphic gray and white."

A look at one of the two other bedrooms in the upstairs owner's suite. This one offers large picture windows that warm the space with natural lighting.

Yet, the highlight of the home is arguably the two-story den, which was carved out of the adjacent two-bedroom rental apartment. The double-height space is awash in natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, contrasting concrete floors with wood paneling.

A look at the lower-level den area, which offers a hanging fireplace and direct access to the backyard garden. A small office is located in the loft area above, which can be accessed by a floating concrete staircase that also connects back to the kitchen and dining area.

The backyard garden is an oasis from city life, with room for plenty of outdoor seating. Mossman also revived a small, detached studio off to the left.

The rental unit includes two bedrooms and one bathroom. Here, the largest of the two sleeping areas feels bright and airy from large windows overlooking the front entrance.
