Located two hours north of New York City in the Hudson Valley town of Coxsackie, Gather Greene is a new luxury campsite and event venue that strikes the perfect balance for indoor/outdoor living.

The site stretches a little over 100 acres, and it encompasses rolling hills, forest, a shale quarry, and a pond. 17 rentable tiny cabins are perched on a ridge overlooking the tree canopy, while the open-air events pavilion has views of the nearby Berkshires and Catskill mountains.

Since their days studying design at the Pratt Institute, owners and interiors designers Jackie Brown and Amna Ali have been fascinated with indoor/outdoor spaces. “We imagined that the whole project would feel like a space where people can come together and have this special feeling they don’t get normally—that is outside their everyday experience,” says Brown.

Opened in spring 2019, Gather Greene hosts weddings from May through October, when groups can rent out the entire property—including the on-site cabins and the events pavilion. During the off-season, the cabins are available to rent for individual stays.

The 6,000-square-foot pavilion comprises 4,000 square feet of outdoor space and 2,000 square feet of indoor space, with six bathrooms, two dressing suites, a lounge, and a catering kitchen. For the walls encompassing the pavilion, the duo designed a wood lattice to serve as a partition. The framework welcomes in light and doesn’t obstruct views of the surrounding countryside.

“We kept everything simple,” Brown says of the pavilion’s materials, which consist of pressure-treated wood, concrete flooring, and Virock—a concrete composite siding.

The exterior siding and decking of the 17 cabins is weather-resistant cedar, and the 160-square foot interiors are clad in pine. Brown and Ali kept sustainability in mind while planning the cabins. “The bigger you build, the more trees have to be cut down,” says Brown. “We had to keep the footprint minimal.”

The tiny cabins have plenty of storage, with space under the beds to stow luggage and hooks for garments. In lieu of bedside tables, the designers added niches to the walls with outlets to charge phones, and larger cutouts hold beverage stations.

Each cabin is furnished with a king bed thoughtfully positioned under a giant window. At the opposite end of the room, a large mirror bounces light and reflects the tree canopy.

Each bathroom has two doors for ease of circulation, and the sinks are located in the showers to make efficient use of space. Ali and Brown embraced a pared-down look for the cabins’ decor, allowing the great outdoors to shine.
