This Bainbridge Island home is set atop a decommissioned military bunker that was built in 1904 as a lookout for coastal defense. The homeowners originally intended to tear down the historic bunker, however Seattle–based Eggleston Farkas Architects recommended that they incorporate it into their home design instead.

“Rather than battle the bunker, an alliance was made,” explain the architects on their website. They aligned a concrete garage with the bunker to form the base of the house, and located the living spaces in a cantilevered steel frame. The striking home offers incredible views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains—and it's currently for sale.
