An Architect Couple’s “Experimental House” in the Hollywood Hills Hits the Market for the First Time

Architects Sarah Graham and Marc Angélil of Los Angeles– and Zurich-based firm AGPS built their own residence, dubbed the Experimental House, in the lush Beachwood Canyon community in the Hollywood Hills.
"The steep hillside site posed significant challenges; an uphill site, seismic conditions, and strict city and neighborhood requirements," reads the project description on AGPS’s website. "The idea was to build a small house that would not feel the limitations of its area."
The double-height living room is lined on one side with a built-in bookshelf with a rolling library ladder. An open loft overlooks the space and caps the semi-enclosed kitchen just beneath it.
Many of the living spaces within the two-bedroom, two-bath residence open to 20-foot-tall ceilings. Carefully positioned windows and glass doors bring tons of natural light inside.
The 2,083-square-foot home includes a large studio space with a separate entrance.
After the Experimental House was completed, the architect duo’s home received several awards, including recognition from the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Institute of Architecture.
"The roof construction is the primary architectural expression of the house," reads the AGPS project description. "Cantilevered by steel beams, the roof is pivoted from the front wall anchored by tension cables. Continuous glass windows are between the top of the house walls and the roof plane, emphasizing the flying roof."
After hitting the market for the first time this April—asking $2,295,000—the loftlike Hollywood Hills residence by architects Sarah Graham and Marc Angélil is currently under contract.
