It ain’t easy being green—but these bedding brands passed rigorous environmental certifications with flying colors.

Coyuchi

Coyuchi has been setting the standard for 100% organic, ethically sourced, and responsibly produced home goods for 30 years. Its list of certifications is long and impressive—including Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), and MADE SAFE—and you can even shop by certification if one in particular speaks to you.

The company’s latest venture is to achieve full circularity by accepting old Coyuchi products and cleaning, repairing, and reselling them (at about a 40% discount) in partnership with The Renewal Workshop. Since this program was introduced in 2017, Coyuchi has diverted over 43,000 pounds of fabric from landfills.

Buffy

Buffy first earned its earth-friendly status by using recycled water bottles as the insulation for its comforters. The company’s signature bedding is made out of OEKO-TEX certified eucalyptus fabric, which can be produced using 10 times less water than cotton, and dyed with natural materials like turmeric and pomegranate. Buffy’s flax linen bedding is made out of hemp, which absorbs five times more CO2 from the air than trees, promotes biodiversity, and improves the soil that it’s grown in.

Avocado

Healthier planet, healthier you. Avocado’s cotton and linen bedding is made entirely from GOTS and OEKO-TEX certified materials. Most of its products are also MADE SAFE certified—a rigorous scientific screening process that only allows the use of ingredients that are not known or suspected to harm human health, animals, aquatic life, or ecosystems. In 2019, Avocado became the first mattress and bedding brand to become Climate Neutral certified, just in case you needed even more reason to snap up its offerings.

Sömn Home

Sömn Home’s mission is to make 100% natural, high-quality products for the discerning client—without compromising on the environment, comfort, or ethics. Its linen sheets are made from 100% pure flax—a natural fiber that is completely biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and renewable. If you prefer cotton bedding, you can rest assured that Somm Home’s other bedding and bath essentials are made from cotton grown using environmentally friendly methods, and the company refuses to use harsh dyes or colorants.

Kotn

While you may be familiar with Kotn’s durable, classically chic clothing line, this Canada-based company also produces sheets, duvet covers, and tea towels made from 100% Egyptian cotton. Launched in 2015, the company works with family-run farms in Portugal and Egypt to ensure safe working practices, fair pay, and quality fibers. However, one caveat is that the cotton is not 100% certified organic. Since many farms lack the knowledge, resources, or motivation to do this, Kotn has embarked on a project to ensure all of its fibers are are certified organic within the next five years. Products made in Portugal use thoughtfully sourced cotton certified by the Better Cotton Initiative, a nonprofit whose certification process ensures that cotton is produced using the most ethical and sustainable methods possible.

The Citizenry

You won’t want for quality with The Citizenry’s bedding—it’s made in small batches by artisans who are experts in their fields. Woven in the oldest family-run linen mill in Portugal, each piece in the stonewashed linen collection is OEKO-TEX certified and made start-to-finish in a fair-trade environment. The Citizenry’s Turkish cotton products are made using 100% organic, long-staple cotton in the Aegean region of Turkey, and are also OEKO-TEX and GOTS certified.

The Modern Dane

The Modern Dane produces bed linens that reflect the traditions and values of the company’s Danish heritage. Accordingly, it only uses the highest quality raw materials and it enforces sustainability in every step of the process. The company’s products are made from GOTS, OEKO-TEX, European Flax, and Masters of Linen–certified linen, and they are hand-sewn in Portugal.
