When Portland-based Dyer Studio first saw the Burlingame kitchen their clients wanted them to transform, they realized quickly they could do a lot with what was already in place. The bones of the kitchen and dining area were solid, and the kitchen was already well-positioned in the home. Instead, the designers strove to completely transform the kitchen while keeping within the original footprint of the space.

Before:

Looking at the above photos, it's clear to see that the kitchen was in need of a serious makeover. The appliances, finishes, and lighting were out of date. A partition wall created an awkward division between the kitchen and dining areas, contributing to a less-than-ideal flow within the space.

After:

To start, the kitchen work station was reorganized to provide a more functional space. By relocating the range from the living room wall to the peninsula, the opportunity to connect the two rooms in a more fluid way appeared. A portion of the living room wall was removed providing a physical and visual connection to the main living space.

Additional shifts followed suit, including the location of the sink, refrigerator, and storage space. The new arrangement provided improved prep space, cabinet storage, and functionality.

Everything from finishes to appliances to lighting was updated. Contemporary walnut cabinets are paired with sleek quartz countertops, textured tile backsplash, and bold terrazzo-like floors. Modern decorative lighting pairs nicely with playful furnishings from the likes of Blu Dot, Rejuvenation, and Hive Modern.

What was once a closed-off kitchen has became an open and bright great room in this mid-century styled abode. According to the designers, the result is "an opened, lightened, and brightened space that supports the daily life of an active family and sparks joy."
