Built in 1960 by famed architecture firm Buff & Hensman, the Ajioka House is a two-story post-and-beam residence sited on almost an acre of lush landscaping in Nichols Canyon, Los Angeles. The sprawling 4,200-square-foot property was once the home of Jerry Bruckheimer, and it currently belongs to designer and entrepreneur Derek Mattison, who commissioned Commune to conduct a major renovation that won a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in 2015.

The massive project sought to undo decades of remodels. Over the course of two years, “the interior walls were removed, windows and skylights were returned to their original locations, [and] doors were made taller.” Commune even rebuilt a pool house that dated back to the 1980s.

The walls are paneled inside and out with planks of reclaimed oak—a design choice inspired by the interior of the popular restaurant Gjelina, located in nearby Venice.
