A Note on Our Expert, Peter Bentel

Peter Bentel is a modernist raised by modernists: The son of influential mid-century architects Frederick and Maria Bentel, Peter is a partner at Bentel & Bentel, which his parents established in 1957. The acclaimed firm is widely known for its hospitality designs, including The Modern restaurant at New York’s MoMA and chef Tom Colicchio’s Craft, Craftbar, Craftsteak, and ’wichcraft eateries in New York, San Francisco, and Las Vegas. Although he keeps a number of stools stocked in the firm’s office in Locust Valley, New York, Bentel’s favorite is the one in his home kitchen, designed by his father, made by his grandfather, and upholstered by his grandmother. “For me, it’s the Proust madeleine.”
