Beige Is Back in a Big Way at Kelly Wearstler’s New Proper Hotel

By Jen Woo / Published by Dwell

Proper unveils its new Santa Monica hotel—complete with luxe amenities, gourmet eats, and captivating earth-toned interiors by Kelly Wearstler.

Hot on the heels of its San Francisco location, Proper just unveiled the first images of its Santa Monica hotel, which will officially open on June 17. It’s a major aesthetic departure from the first location, although it still reflects Kelly Wearstler’s eye for bold spaces, unique shapes, and an abundance of pattern play.

The space is infused with one of Wearstler's signature motifs: pattern on pattern.

The hotel’s furnishings and decor feature eccentric shapes and textures.

Nestled in Santa Monica’s downtown core, the hotel updates a 1928 Arthur E. Harvey-designed Spanish colonial revival building with sleek new construction and 271 stylish luxury rooms. Inside, an abundance of sunlight, organic hues, and soft textures conjure the sensation of a restful day by the beach.

A structured bench at the foot of this bed is balanced by a rounded table and an organically shaped vase.

The guest rooms are placid, yet playful, and permeated by fun, geometric shapes. In one guest suite, an oversized, upholstered arch serves as a headboard; striped, checkered, and fuzzy chairs provide whimsical seating; and muted floral wallpaper adds a feminine touch.

Muted, floral wallpaper adorns the walls.

Decorative elements pepper the hotel, creating unique focal points.

A large, sliding door opens up to a bathroom swathed in stone—from peach-toned flooring and walls to an inky, dual-sink vanity with a blend of brushed silver and gold accents. On the other side, the roseate flooring melds into brick-toned tile and obsidian-framed windows.

The Zen-like bathrooms are cloaked in stone and wood.

The monolithic stay has three restaurants/bars, including Onda, the first-ever collaboration between chefs Jessica Koslow (Sqirl) and Gabriela Camara (Contramar). It also offers a 24-hour, 2,500-square-foot fitness center with a yoga terrace, and a rooftop pool with ocean and city views.

Rust-hued tile provides a pop of color against the onyx windows and bench legs.

Naturally, the hotel's spa is presided over by an internationally celebrated Ayurvedic guru. At Surya, Martha Soffer will offer individually curated programs supporting physical, mental, and spiritual wellness via therapeutic massage, steam and oil treatments, cooking, yoga, and meditation.

A vase filled with fluffy reeds lends a bit of softness to the stone bathroom.

Truly, there's no need to leave the grounds—although if you're feeling the call of the sea after taking in the rooftop view, you can borrow one of the hotel’s surfboards and hit the beach. Reservations just officially opened for stays beginning June 17.
