Its really a good work.. great design.. I like a lot..
Interesting idea but General Motors is already doing it... GM and Segway have been doing this type of thing for the past few years..
This is genius, until a fellow named Keith decides service it himself. How well you be able to sit in your autonomobile knowing Keith is comming the other way in his self-serviced autonomobile.
It is not widely known, but a great deal of work has already been done in automatic personal transportation – including many industrial designs which have ranged from renderings to full-sized mock ups (skywebexpress.com) to fully operational test systems (vectusprt.com). And a system has been in daily service on the campus of West Virginia University for over 30 years with an outstanding record of safety and reliability. The technology is called Personal Rapid Transit in the United States, and Podcars in Sweden. A good introduction can be found at personalrapidtransit.com. The best gateway website for info on this subject is Jerry Schneider’s "Innovative Transportation Technologies": http://faculty.washington.edu/jbs/itrans/.
Reminds me of trains.
What about infants and children?
Man am I glad I'll be dead by then.
How much do you have to pay to get a profile like this in dwell?? I can't believe 90% of what I see here is featured based on it's merits. Or does it fly if it has a euro-dwell aesthetic, no matter how ham-headed? Congratulations, you've designed a wrapper for something you understand only as far as the Pantone color chip. It reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Marge says, "see all that stuff in there Homer? That's why your robot never worked."
RIGHT ON JD
JD you are such a negative person. I can't understand how people can be such a Debbie Downer..great jod JD ! Live like that as the rest of us are moving forward into the future...don't be complainign as your work will probably be never be mentioned or published...GREAT JOB TO THE DESIGNERS for thinking out of the box!
Watching a little top gear there Jason? man, I hope this never happens, I dont like that life is becoming more and more about letting machines take over for you. I still enjoy doing things for my self.
I've watched this concept rendition on the discovery channel so many times. How do they get away with presenting this work as original? this company is giving ID designers a bad rap...i.e sexy meaningless shapes and over contextualized explanations.
I can visualize pods in urban areas, and parks, even in botanical and zoological areas, as routine transport. The typical image of hunched shoulders over the pc on a table of the urban wireless cafe is the more practical accomodation travelling to and from work. Park and ride lots on the perimeter of an airport-like landscape. It sounds too dangerous and frustrating to mix pods with "manually" driven automobiles in traffic.
Sorry to sound negative Conan. But for some reason (maybe blame it on my puritanical American underpinnings) I am always annoyed when I see some "solution" given legitimacy knowing it is nothing more than paid advertising. I guess I think it should say so and my annoyance is less for the designers than for the magazine. Sure, the idea is half-baked and totally superficial, but I have no problem with that, designers should design whatever they want. If you want to design a house for the future on Saturn (bothering to know nothing about Saturn but confident your concept will never be put to the inconvenient test of reality and being exposed as a hack), go for it. But it's not product design, it's set design, and it's for people interested in creating imagery for a world that doesn't exist in order to convince an audience that it does, which is exactly what this is. I simply find it a bit cynical to use the green trend together with this type of charlatanistic marketing which is, frankly dishonest and ultimately undermines the efforts of those who work hard to understand the problems they address and worse, the legitimacy of press given them for their effort.
It's always positive to see creative imagination at work. Just how positive remains to be seen.
I am very excited and can’t wait to have one. The car will save life, time, money, and environment. It is good to have designers think out of the box. Maybe we don’t have to waiting until 2040 to get a car like this. Design is about solving problems and come up with solutions other didn’t think of. One there is a good idea other can build on to it and it will speedy up the possibility of making something happen soon. Thank you Dwell for brings the story to your readers and good job to Mike and Maaike.
