Great stuff! Can't wait for the next installments. I found some pages from gallery art catalog that we'll be hanging in our home of some of Josef Albers' squares. They're just great. Anyone know of a good source for Albers prints? I found "Homage to the Square" and purchased it (poster print.) I also found "Climate" and "Beaming" posters, but everywhere I tried to order them ended up being out of stock. Keep up the great job Dwell! I got hooked a few years ago and just recently completed my mission (obsession, if you ask my lovely wife) to aquire every issue...April 2002 is on it's way and will complete the set! Pete
In college I did not care for this kind of art, but after being a designer for fifteen years, I truly admire his work.
I discovered the wonder of Josef Albers as my teacher Dick Nelson presented us with the same teaching methodology of discovery that Albers held dear. I saw color relationship in ways never imagined before. Nelson studied with Albers in the 50's, was included in some of his books, and has carried the torch becoming a the standard bearer of understanding color relationships here in Maui, Hawaii. Albers had a profound impact on his life and he has had a profound impact on many many artists here in Maui. I've taken some of these concepts that I've learned from Nelson and digitized them here: http://colorisrelative.com
If you are looking for actual Albers prints, meaning lithographs and etchings, Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles still has some. From my limited experience of viewing paintings of Albers and looking at the prints I have to say that the prints seem to be superior. I say this because the printed quality of the lithograph removes any brush marks, or stray globs of paint, or paint brush hairs stuck in the surface of the painting, and allows Albers color theory to show purely with out blemish. The website for Gemini is: http://www.geminigel.com, enjoy!
Great minds think alike, Aaron. I've got a story coming up in the July premiere issue of ncartsee magazine (www.ncartsee.com) on the four Albers paintings on display in the new North Carolina Museum of Art, and on the upcoming 2012 exhibit of 170 of his paintings and works on paper.
Albers urged his students to "get more with less." You've done that in this video. It's pitch-perfect. Congratulations, and thanks!
this video was amazing and truly inspirational.
I basically am as blank as the squares of colors to art theory, open and impressionable and this impressed me; his theory of teaching, to search and the universe in a square! My mind has stretched past the lines of the square, into the colors...
Does anyone know if the band or artist mentioned as "WONDERFUL" (in the opening credits for this video) has a MySpace page or any other tracks? The music was a really great choice for this video.
Found these - http://www.wonderfulmusic.net/ and/or http://www.myspace.com/wonderfulmusic
Great video. Not impressed with the way he was man-handling the paintings, though.
This is a wonderful introduction to Albers' teachings. Thanks for this educational tool. I teach the Albers/Itten color practice at FIT's School of Continuing Education and would love to use this for my classes. The greatest part of Albers' teaching is the understanding of color and what it means to the individual. One does not have to be an artist to appreciate color.
It's interesting how hard it is for some people to access Albers's work. A great video like this makes Josef far more accessible which is so refreshing in an art world often bent on excluding people. The Albers Foundation has done an amazing job of making Albers a household name all for the good of increased appreciation of color and art in our day to day lives which I am certain is all Josef hoped for.
I am so delighted that I stumbled on this lovely little documentary on Albers and the beauty he saw and captured with his simplistic in form-yet depthless paintings of color. The discipline, passion, and intellect Albers possessed was marvelous! The ending was a bit cathartic for me as well. :] Absolutely lovely job capturing this all, Dwell!
very simple and poetic. I loved that.
One word says it all - INSPIRATIONAL - thank you.
Brilliant.
Thank you for this inspirational documentary. I once took a class on the interaction of color in patchwork quilts, using just solids, and I wish I had been told of the work of Josef Albers then, because that class changed radically my vision of quilt art.
