Corian is great for counters, because it’s a seamless material that can be formed into any shape. I like tile for flooring, because of its ease of cleaning.

Great film and an interesting project, but on a point of detail, Corian is described by one of the students as being "a sustainable material because it never really degrades" (3mins 25). OK so long life can be argued as contributing to sustainability, but 1) Corian is from a non renewable source, 2) it contains either zero or relatively small percentages of recycled material and 3) it cannot be melted down and 4) it doesn't biodegrade effectively. It's green credentials are therefore somewhat in doubt - see: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/07/materials-is-corian-green.php
Wow Dwell, what a sellout this was. I hope Corian payed a nice advertising fee, b/c that's what it is, an ad. Corian sustainable? Not as I define that word.
Oh please, what's the name of that song ? Nice ad btw.
please , the name of that beatifulll song., noel 01.25.11
The beautiful song (s) are by singer/songwriter Rob Keith. Also the man behind "Baskervilles". I'll try and locate name of the songs in the video. There's a few.
Sarah, I don't see what a big deal it is that Dwell did or didn't get paid to publish our video, after all that's what advertising is. That's also why companies put together projects like this, to show their products. Why is that offensive to you?
This is about the students and their design, not purely about Corian. Yes we used Corian, but why is that the only thing you took away from this? The basis behind these projects is beauty. It's a student project take it as that. Are you also completely against and denouncing Karim Rashid for his Corian exhibit that was in milan? Or do you look at the things he created instead of purely what he used to create it.
Bravo to all the students and their innovative work!
Without the support from DuPont, C.H. Briggs, and the fabricators, these designers could not have expressed their amazing ideas. The choice of the medium was part of the assignment. Not an add scheme for Dupont Corian. The sponsers do deserve some recognition based on the amount of donated time and effort that was put into these projects. Excellent job done by all.
Great examples of creative and beautiful work. All projects shown did push on the boundaries of this typical "solid surface" material!
I have worked in healthcare for 33 years. As the years go by, I have often wondered how the healthcare environment and the equipment used in it could be better designed , taking into consideration the needs of the patient ( comfort and safely) and the needs of the staff... Which by the way are probably the same..plus ergonomics. Corian presents a great medium for the healthcare environment. It's smooth surfaces and flexability make an ideal surface for hospitals..especially considering the wear and tear a hospital environment needs to take. And it's smooth contoured surfaces make it an ideal medium for the degree and depth of cleaning that OUGHT to be performed on ALL pieces of hospital furniture and equipment. With infection control being a major concern in healthcare, a Corian based design for as much equipment and furniture as possible in a hospital setting could stand as a great design study as well as a great research project for an infection control practitioner. If you search Healthcare literature you will find articles and research to support the need for streamlined surfaces like Corian to decrease the infection risks in the healthcare setting. I hope one of you will take this idea and run with it. I really think you are on to something. Good luck and keep those creative juices flowing.
Corian is a durable acrylic surface that can be used in many ways. I am a kitchen designer at Lowe's and am proud to use this product almost daily. I also collect discontinued color samples and have used them as 2 x 2 tiles for table projects and even small bits of jewelry for personal use. Corian may have sponsored this project, but to do was simply to show the versitility of their product, redefining a standard. I say Bravo! Also to those of you who are looking at this in a negative light, why be that way? Not everything has a commercial fraud based motive.
