Salone Satellite 2011

One of the most exciting perks of being lucky enough to attend Italy's Salone Internazionale del Mobile, also known as the Milan Furniture Fair, is having the opportunity to get a glimpse of undiscovered talent at Salone Satellite. Located at nearly the end of the sprawing Feriamilano exhibition complex, Salone Satellite is an area devoted to students, independent designers, and enterprising producers of design-forward prototypes in need of a manufacturer and a distributor. All year long, a carefully selected jury of design cognoscenti reviews submissions from all over the world, and grants access to a final tally of young hopefuls looking to make their introduction into the realm of high design. Check out our slideshow to see a few items that caught our eye today.

Here, at the event’s fiftieth anniversary event, young designers showcase their work. Salone del Mobile has launched more than a few design careers.

Barcelona-based firm Mermelada Estudio, comprised of industrial designers Juan Miguel Juarez, Laura Blasco, and Alex Estevez, conceived and showcased a collection entitled Weekend Objects. One of our favorites of the bunch was Druida, a BBQ grill with an elegant body and an equally winsome grill pattern.

One of the first sights one encounters upon entering the 2011 Salone Satellite is Ultra Gamma, an installation created by Ezri Tarazi that is based on the concept of a frequency, undiscovered as of yet by humankind, that reveals the internal structure and motivation of the human body. The piece is made up of five conical structures, each more than fifteen feet high, that are illuminated from within by pre-programmed LED light configurations. Judging from the amount of legs we saw poking out from the bottom of the cones, Ultra Gamma was a very successful experiment.

The three principals of Innovo Design, Christoph John, Jovana Bogdanovic, and Zhang Lei, met in Milan in 2009. Together they launched a company, and this year they announced their collection for Salone Satellite entitled 'Future Tradition'. Shown here is the Paper Chair, which is created by gluing layers of handmade paper together, much like a traditional paper umbrella.
