This week Design Within Reach previewed their Spring 2011 collection where I got a sneek peek of some of their new products and furnishings. A current running throughout much of the furniture was attention to detailing and an interest in craftsmanship reflected in the ways pieces were joined, the materials used, and the how an individual furnishing looked in the round‚ not just from the front. In the slideshow, I share ten of my favorites from the collection.
The January 2011 Color Story: Plum. From Saarinen‚ deep indigo Executive Armchair and silvery lavender Tulip Stool, to the violet Theater Sofa and magenta Planter Lounge Chair (shown here), variants of plum provide pops of color that can be used in many different decorating motifs. These pieces will all be available come January.
Taking its formal cues from the Charles and Ray Eames's molded ply leg splint, DWR's Elan chaise made of FSC-certified teak brings the sculpted lines of molded furniture to the outdoors.
I particularly loved how the stainless steel joinery acts as completely functional ornament on the chair, celebrating the smaller moments‚ in the overall design. There's also an optional cushion, though I wouldn't want to disguise the gentle curve of the seat or back.
This coffee table is part of the Royce Nelson-designed Ollie collection. I appreciated the fact that many of the pieces in this collection incorporated storage. The base of the table is weather-resistant synthetic rattan, and the top and feet are solid teak (responsibly harvested, of course).
Also part of the Ollie collection, this lounge chair features extra-wide arms for additional seating or a makeshift table.
Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitllet (for Dedon) collaborated on the Play Collection. According to Starck, the collection represents "the best of the human and the best of the machine."
Running through the center of the Play dining table is a stainless steel ice trough‚ great for chilling food or drinks.
The intricate structure of the Rusa Dining Table by Kaa Design contrasts with the minimalist table top.
The Rusa sectional can be custom configured and features durable Sunbrella fabrics.
When the Rusa chaise is lifted, the structure forms an intriguing geometric pattern.
