It certainly can be, but as with any project it depends on the architect, the fabricator, and how everything is organized in anticipation of installation at your site. Your architect needs to be very detail oriented and your fabricator needs to be very good, as well. “Very good” and “very detail oriented” do not usually correspond to “very inexpensive.” You should weigh your goals: if you want a tight and engaging project, plan to hire professionals that can give you what you are looking for, and respect their talents and what they bring to the project. A good architect and a good builder team can almost always save you more money than the perceived expense of their services simply by providing you with strong design and a detailed, thoughtful approach.
