Walter Gropius wanted the Hagerty House, his first commission in the United States, to be as close to the sea as possible. He sited the structure a precarious 20 feet from the shore and let the setting dictate the design.

John Hagerty was a good friend of my grandparents. He was a perfectionist, an exacting gentleman, who was his own harshest critic -- he expected no less from anyone else. He eventually founded a company called Cohasset Colonials (which still exists) not long after his mother's house was built that sold high-quality assemble-yourself furniture, advertising in Yankee magazine and other regional magazines.
Good post. I am going to save the URL and will definitely visit again. Keep it up.
Masterful design. Love how the house surrenders to the landscape.
If there is a heaven on earth this is it. I spend most of my time indoors and I would love this one.
An extraordinary design ahead of its time. John Hagerty also rebuilt/refurbished antique automobiles, loved painting the ocean landscape and was an expert sailor. He was a wonderful, special individual.
