It was the surf and the artsy vibe that attracted Eric Grunbaum to Venice Beach, California, 18 years ago. An avid surfer and creative director for an advertising agency, he thrives on lively environs. So it’s no surprise that he turned to the Los Angeles–based architect Barbara Bestor to design a house for him near the Pacific. Bestor, the chair of graduate studies at Woodbury University School of Architecture, has a formidable reputation in Southern California for her bohemian modernism, and for Grunbaum, she created a 2,000–square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bath home that harbors a traditional sensibility with a contemporary heart. Grunbaum gives us the tour of his modern surf shack.

Anyone know where that 'be careful' graphic was found? I absolutely love it.
I love that painting with the measurements. funny concept, and yet cool.
Great article! We were totally thrilled to work on this project with Barbara and Eric, and to be included in this dwell feature. Just want to emphasize that we are Landscape DESIGNERS, not Landscape Architects, as reported.
Thanks, Stephanie. We've updated the caption.
How is it that in every article my projects end up in, the magazine never gives any type of recognition to the General Contractor that built the project? These projects can become very complex and not just any contracor is capable of building them. Sincerely, Glenn Lyons Glenn Lyons Construction inc.
I agree, the contractors seem to be omitted despite the very important role they play in the project. I would also like to see the costs of these "affordable" projects included in the articles. How much did Mr. Grunbaum's home cost to build from start to finish, including architect fees? I think this information would only help promote the building of beautifully designed homes. I think most people feel that great design is unattainable and resort to stock plans, or build monstrosities like mini-mansions. I hope that Dwell will work with residents who's homes are featured to give readers more information.
re: "Anyone know where that 'be careful' graphic was found?" If you're referring to the print with the hand holding the knife. I'm pretty sure it's by Geoff McFetridge. Bestor projects often features him in one way or another.
A couple notes from the homeowner: First, regarding the contractor, Glenn Lyons was outstanding to work with -- professional, detail-oriented, 100% integrity, clear communicator, and good-humored even when the going got tough. Plus, he was able to deal with my pickiness, etc. I would recommend him without hesitation! Two, the "Be Careful" print is indeed by Geoff McFetridge. http://www.championdontstop.com/ Third, if Jason is looking for his own "dimensional" painting, the artist is accepting commissions...though I suspect you already knew that. http://markabellera.com/
Does anyone know who makes that ribbon/globe-type light fixture over the table in the library? It's very attractive...
Does anybody know who makes that bed -- or was it custom-powder coated?
