KRDB has been a leader in affordable, modern and green in the US. Their new move into modular is probably the best option for making prefab actually affordable like so many others have been claiming but not delivering on. Great post and looking forward to more from KRDB in the future.

Why would one ever design a home with a completely open/uncovered front porch? Aside from that, I presume that the simple, plain elevation might appeal to some. Having whined about that, though, there is no question that new designs, materials and construction techniques are going to be imperative for the future. I tip my hat to all innovators.

On the 36 foot model I would like to see the plumbing on the inside wall between the bath and kitchen moving the kitchen sink adjacent ( looking out a window) with piping inside the insulated building envelope. Massachusetts winters call for more insulation plus it is more efficient for plumbing to be back to back with the kitchen sink ( and dw ) with easier venting. I like the link idea and have had similar ideas for what I call freespace, the atrium created between the boxes and roofing or enclosing with a combination of solar panels and skylight. This space will lessen the overall square footage costs which is the usual builder's trick to provide more air under roof while still having only one kitchen and a bath or two. If you weren't so far away I would consider building with your company for the variation offered in modern styling with the efficiency gain of the modular units. Perhaps I could get some land in Arizona and try a variation for snowbirds on spec ?

The Music and Technology festivals that make up South by Southwest may have come and gone but that doesn't mean that innovation can't still be found in Austin, Texas. Austin based firm KRDB have recently created a prefabricated, modular home company they simply call ma, a name derived from the Japanese word meaning consciousness of place, or the serene space in-between.
