I love the stair bookcase. It gives me inspiration to create something similar at my house.
Okay, so why in blazes would you put a chair and footrest at the bottom of a staircase as in picture #6? I can't think of a worse place, especially in the case of a fire, power outage, or other emergency. I'm obviously missing something here.
I meant #5. Drat.
Good grief! Relax. The chair in the stairwell is most likely just the photographers choice. Interior shots are always a challenge to get them to say what is needed. You can see that there is plenty of room for the chair and foot stool beyond the stair. I think it was just the photographer taking artistic license. Make note as you look at future pics of interiors. Often furniture is squished together in front of a fireplace, or all the dining chairs are taken from the side of the table that the photographer is on. It doesn't mean that is the way the person lives there. It is just for the shot.
Hehe! It is pretty funny on first glance. Nice place, though.
I agree with Steve, and with vavaveve. Yes, it was almost certainly the photographer who put it there as a way of balancing out the shot (and hopefully not just adding a name-dropper piece of furniture to the frame), but that doesn't mean it was a good choice as it certainly does make for a nonsensical interior. If a photographer has to destroy the reality of a space just to find a good composition, that may not be the right corner to shoot. However I do think he or she could have gotten the same effect with the splash of red by using just the footrest under the painting where the chair is sitting, thereby giving some kind of flow to the staircase but also anchoring that side of the room. But then again, perhaps this Monday morning quarterback has hindsight less than 20/20.
To Steve, vavaveve and David—nope, the red chair was there when they originally sent us scouting shots, and we absolutely do not move furniture to suit the composition of a room. That particular placement is indicative of the homeowner's choices, not Dwell's.
I think it's even funnier that there's a bicycle (a trendy vintage one at that) parked out front in #3, near the sidewalk. That certainly doesn't "live" there--it would be stolen in 10 seconds in Toronto! So who put it there? Owner? Photographer?
I love the chairs and table. I found the chairs, but I'm not sure whow designed the dining table. Does anyone know? Much appreciated! I love this place!
What is up with all the negativity? This is a lovely home, nice use of space, light and comfort.
