Stick Around during a Renovation
I learned during our kitchen renovation that it really is a full-time job. If you want it done right and according to your vision, and not that of your contractor, be available. Make sure every…

Love the use of industrial materials in the deli area. And IKEA cabinets offer unbeatable design-to-value ratio!
It's not intresting! Be successful
Like to know the source for the kitchen backsplash mosaic tile. Nice place!
Gotta ask, how close is this deli to a local multi national or large corporation to allow for the lunch crowd. Judging by the photo I applaud you for the such a sophisticated set up for a rough'esque area.
Micah, The truth is that there really is no big government agency or massive corporate headquarters near Taylor's Gourmet. It's locals who come in or folk who've made the trip out. If you live in DC you should really try it out. Casey and David told me that they're opening a new location as well in NW. Looking forward to that. Aaron
Back Splash: We were looking for ultra cheep but cool tile. Guess where we found the cheapest Ebay baby! We negotiated to buy all the tile for less the $2 a sq! We used the same tile in the bathrooms stand up shower floor and walls and kitchen backsplash. We also purchased all of our HVAC units on ebay then we had our go-to mechanical sub perform labor install price.
We are actually located less then a mile from the US Capitol, so we have a ton for Hill Staffers visit us for lunch, DC government building are close by, As well as a large population of “MOTH” “mothers on the hill” that have newborn’s that come in daily for their Taylor Fix
This is a great place! I really enjoy the design of the facade and the food is really wonderful. With luck, the proposed streetcar line on H Street will help to further bolster this area. For those familiar with DC, H Street has a feel not too dissimilar from U Street, NW about a decade or so ago when new independent stores and restaurants started popping up, which, seeing the popularity of U Street today, is encouraging! Aaron, thanks for the update on the potential NW location...would also be great to see a location around Barracks Row, if the guys are listening ;)
Still waiting for the "Bart"ram Ave.". Chicken cutlet-roasted reds-pesto-spinach leaves-and whatever cheese goes best!
I would like more info on the kitchen cabinets, using the ikea premades. Does anyone know exactly what they did and used? I love them and would like to do them for my kitchen.... Thanks, Yvette
is that a SOVA cup I see? Miss you guys!
Would be awesome if we could encourage something like this in River East. Anacostia, Barry Farm, Congress Heights--we are in dire need of it. You'd be surprised at the amount of young urban professionals who live over there, ready and willing to occupy/hang out/shop at a place like this. I'll be making the trip to NE to check you guys out. Congrats on the spread in Dwell.
I'm writing as a customer of both this magazine and of Taylor's; but after reading this article I don't think I'll be buying anymore Issues of Dwell. The author and magazine seem to forget that generations of mostly African-American communities already live on H street. And while there are problems, it is already vibrant! Although not in the way white people with a penchant and income for modern design generally prefer. I hope that the author reconsiders some of the assumptions made about who belongs where and what that looks like.
Love the Edison light bulb fixture in the deli. What materials were used to create this fixture and where does one find them?
Where do you purchase the stainless tables from that fit over the ikea cabinets? Thanks a
The photo that shows the front of the business, there is a roll top door. Could you shoot me a brand name or a website with related products. It's a pretty sweet idea and would almost like to do something similar.
I've found the H Street neighborhood to be quite "vibrant" - with all the associated crime, vacant and condemned houses, wind-blown trash, and graffiti one would associate with a "vibrant" husk of a neighborhood whose past and current residents have entirely neglected maintaining for generations. Taylor's has done an effective job at renovating a residence and storefront on an especially bleak block, without the need for exorbitant contractors. Clever use of simple materials create an interesting and open environment. It's a shame the food is not up to the same par as the design and renovation. The bread is stale and hard, and the subs are priced above what the local economy can bear. A destination for west side hipsters? Possibly. But the charm is going to wear off rapidly unless Taylor's can raise the bar in terms of food quality and pricing.
Could you please tell me where you got the floor lamp in Casey Patten's living room (pg 94)? We love it. Thanks.
Mark - the bread is stale and hard? It's supposed to be hard. It's certainly not stale. If the subs are priced above what the local economy can bear, then why are they doing so well? You should stick to Subway. Eat Fresh.
awesome! Nice work, gentlemen.
can you tell me where you purchased the coffee table? i looked up the pia coffee table on cb and it's definitely not it. also, i love your wall color. what is it? thanks!
Any suggestions on how to find a place similar to the one's you guys have for living? I am expecting to move to DC in the next year and am casually looking. I prefer to stay away from the big building apt style places and would love to have a single place similar to what you guys created. Not sure if I am ready for a renovation project but maybe if the price was right. Just wondering, any suggestions are welcome.
If you’re strong buyer you can defiantly buy a building like ours but I emphasize strong because banks aren’t lending paper very easy for mix use. Right now I actually have a friend who is looking to buy on H st NE he is having a HELL of a time trying to find a bank to lend and he is STRONG on paper. I own a brokerage in DC shoot me an email though our website I can def. Point you in the right direct since I have been through the process before. info@taylorgourmet.com But once you do get into the building its really amazing to live over a retail space and in such and up and coming area as H St NE. I would highly recommend it David Mazza
