What a great house ! But ... Why does a City Councilman live in such a show-house that it is featured in a magazine like DWELL ? Because he CAN !! It is lavish, extravagant and (judging from the view) way above the common people of Los Angeles that he is supposed to represent. An L.A. City Councilman's salary is $178,789 a year - a crazy amount to pay - and that does not include perks like these: "LA City Council members get free gas for their free vehicles that are repaired for free at the Civic Center, and which enable the council members to tool around town for free with their huge, free staffs of roughly 20 to 25 aides all paid by taxpayers, not to mention their free, "discretionary," money pots that each council member privately controls."
This is a beautiful house--tastefully done, modest and simple, but shows the next generation of green living in LA. I love Garcetti's green policy (full disclosure--he helped our school get a community garden), and he has always pushed the envelope policy-wise. To see his and his wife's personal taste (I disagree that this is extravagant) and their personal commitment to green living is great too. One last note, I would take issue with the last comment, since these "aides" are the people who we rely on in my neighborhood to help us do amazing projects. I feel that I am getting every cent of my taxpayer money when the results (like the turnaround of my neighborhood in Silver Lake, where I have lived for 23 years) are so positive. Go Garcetti!
