What a house! fantastic. We are currently looking into having a house build just outside PIttsburgh PA. What was a cost of the house in this article? Thanks.
Pure ingenuity, true foresight and a great space with history! And it just need alittle (alot!) of love!
How much did you pay for the property?
With such a insulated house (twice the value required by code), I would like to know about any concerns about the air exchange inside. For example, if you take a steamy shower, boil water while cooking, etc., how well does the house remove the moisture? Or even everyday smells? Old houses are excellent with air exchange because they are so poorly insulated, but the downside is the cost of heating/cooling. But what happens if it flips the other way, excellent insulation but very poor air exchange?
$70,000 for the construction sounds like a pipe dream. What did it REALLY cost?
I also looking for home neat Little Canada, Minnesota @ reasonable cost. Ronnie Gibbs
Jerry, When my wife and I built our home here in Montana, we really focuded on insulating and making our home tight/energy efficient. Not long after we moved in, we noticed moisture problems, etc. After having an air ventilation system installed, the problem went away. It costs us a bit more per month on our power bill when its running (six-months out of the year), but its not significant.
Minimalistic approach to interior design pulled together nicely and still interesting.
Here (Quebec) we have -22° F winters and 90°F summers so our houses need to be well insulated. As per the building code, all new houses must have an air exchange system installed. Mostly used in winter since we keep the windows open in summer!
